It was an ecstatic Ridgeview High team after Saturday's last-second win in the Central Section boys Division III title game.

And it was disbelief and dejection for the Wolf Pack team on Wednesday night at Ridgeview.

McFARLAND -- Talent and teamwork carried the McFarland boys soccer team to the brink of the biggest win in school history. But it was the Cougars' tenacity and determination that pushed them over the top.

With just seconds remaining in sudden death overtime, Jonathan Iniguez crossed the ball to Martin Labrada who banged it into the back of the net, giving McFarland a thrilling 3-2 Southern California Regional Division III semifinal victory Wednesday over Lancaster-Paraclete.

The playoff hope flicker the Bakersfield Condors had heading into a three-game showdown with the Idaho Steelheads grew even dimmer on Wednesday night.

Idaho goaltender Jerry Kuhn stopped 51 shots as the Steelheads beat the Condors 3-1 in Boise.

SANTA BARBARA -- Three CSU Bakersfield relief pitchers shut out UC Santa Barbara over the final six innings Tuesday afternoon and wildness by the Gauchos' bullpen helped the Roadrunners rally for a 7-6 victory.

The Roadrunners (7-6) trailed 6-5 entering the eighth inning, but loaded the bases with none out on two walks and a hit by pitch.

E. Kenneth "Ziggy" Seigfried has been hired as CSUB's senior associate athletic director for development and major gifts.

Siegfried has served as the University of Memphis' director of development of the university's Fogleman College of Business and Economics for more than two years.

The SCGA's tournament season is about to get underway full swing as two of the more popular events will be conducting qualifying this month, with finals scheduled for April.

The 78th SCGA Amateur Net Championships will begin qualifying this week and according the SCGA website, our local amateur players will be competing at two courses: Sunset Hills CC in Thousand Oaks and Griffith Park GC in LA.

CSU Bakersfield head men's basketball coach Rod Barnes was named Independent Coach of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness.com.

The website, which awards all-conference and national honors each week for several collegiate sports, named Barnes 'Coach of the Year,' among the four NCAA Division I Independents for his 16-14 record in his first year with the Roadrunners. The three other independents, aside from CSUB, are Seattle, University of Nebraska-Omaha and Longwood (Va.).

Max Carter and Joey Skracic combined on a one-hitter and tournament MVP Erik Williams had three hits, including a triple, to lead Stockdale High to an 18-1 victory over North on Saturday in the championship game of the American Division of the Terrio Therapy Spring Classic baseball tournament at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

It was the fourth Terrio title of the past five years for Stockdale (4-1).

As teammates at Lancaster-Desert Christian High, Taylor Aikenhead and Tyler Shryock were known as "TNT."

The pair was certainly a dynamite combination for the CSU Bakersfield baseball team on Sunday.

More than four hours and 200 laps after it began, the 2012 Bakersfield Speedway season opener came to a close as hometown favorite Scott Pounds took the checkered flag in a shortened 20-lap IMCA modified main event.

Pounds, the 2010 track champion, survived a caution-filled race after taking the lead on lap five, and held off Danny Lauer, who started on the pole.

The excitement continues this week for a couple of local teams who struck it big in last weekend's Central Section basketball finals.

Indpendence's girls, who upset Ridgeview 49-46 for the Division III section championship in Fresno on Saturday, are seeded No. 6 in the Southern California half of the CIF State Basketball Championships. The Falcons (26-5) will host No. 11 Oxnard-Rio Mesa (25-6) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

For a group of people who like to get from point A to point B in a hurry, drag racers are a patient lot.

That's because more time is spent waiting to make a run down the quarter-mile than actually running down the track. A phrase often heard is "hurry up and wait."

Silas Nacita pushed. He pulled. He deked and dove and rolled, increasingly desperate in what might be the last wrestling match of his life.

But in the end, this wasn't Nacita's night. He and Clovis' Zach Nevills were 3-3 against each other in the past two seasons, and Game 7, Saturday night's 170-pound state championship, went to Nevills.

FRESNO -- With a minute remaining and her team down two points Saturday afternoon, Independence High School backup guard Khiylah Dean found herself with the ball and a wide-open look at the basket from behind the 3-point line.

"This was the biggest moment of my life," Dean said.

FRESNO -- It was only fitting that Javier Kirksey was holding the plaque given to Ridgeview for winning Saturday's Central Section Division III championship as the team celebrated.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. The highest moment in my lifetime so far," said Kirksey, a senior guard for the Wolf Pack.
