CSUB builds momentum with sweep of Air Force

Taylor Aikenhead, like his Cal State Bakersfield teammates, has been going through a rough stretch.

But not Wednesday. The sophomore left-hander tossed four hitless innings to highlight CSUB's 6-2 win over Air Force and a sweep of the two-game series at Hardt Field.

Jeff Campbell will have some company.

Nick Mears of Bakersfield Country Club will join Campbell, also of BCC, in the 28th SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Rancho Santa Fe GC on April 16-17 after he advanced from qualifying at Rustic Canyon GC in Moorpark last week. And he did it the same way as Campbell did -- via a playoff. The Mid-Amateur is for players at least 25 years old that have indexes of 5.4 or less.

Bakersfield College's baseball team rolled to its fourth win in five games, beating College of the Canyons 14-0 in Santa Clarita on Tuesday.

Jordan Turner went 3-for-4 with two home runs and had four RBIs, and Elijah Trail hit a grand slam as part of a six-run sixth inning that blew the game open. Trail had five RBIs overall.

Trey Johnson came off the bench to score 20 points, and Brian Butch and Jeremy Wise added 19 apiece Tuesday to pace the Bakersfield Jam past the host Tulsa 66ers 108-102.

Bakersfield's 91-75 lead after three quarters dwindled to 103-100 with 1:28 left, but two late baskets by Wise helped to seal the victory. Dwight Buycks led Tulsa with 30 points.

Roadrunners baseball returns home on 8-game losing streak

The Bakersfield Condors acquired rookie defenseman Francis Meilleur off waivers from the Greenville (S.C.) Road Warriors, the team announced Monday. Meilleur (pronounced may-YUR) is expected to play this week as the Condors have three games at home to conclude the regular season.

"We're excited to get him here," Condors coach Matt O'Dette said. "He was stuck in a situation with affiliated players and we're looking forward to seeing what he can do."

Yes, Dave Hillestad paced as his Stockdale boys tennis team lost a couple of crucial tight matches in the deciding Lynch Cup match Saturday, but there was more than just worry in his step.

There was excitement, too, even though the Mustangs lost 4-2 to Clovis-Buchanan, which came into town and left with the championship. That's because Stockdale lost 7-2 earlier this year to Buchanan.
