Defending champs are fast on slow day

Bakersfield.com Community - Sun, 03/04/2012 - 21:01

For a group of people who like to get from point A to point B in a hurry, drag racers are a patient lot.

That's because more time is spent waiting to make a run down the quarter-mile than actually running down the track. A phrase often heard is "hurry up and wait."

Silver lining for BHS

Bakersfield.com Community - Sun, 03/04/2012 - 07:52

Silas Nacita pushed. He pulled. He deked and dove and rolled, increasingly desperate in what might be the last wrestling match of his life.

But in the end, this wasn't Nacita's night. He and Clovis' Zach Nevills were 3-3 against each other in the past two seasons, and Game 7, Saturday night's 170-pound state championship, went to Nevills.

State wrestling notebook: Clovis eclipses Driller scoring mark

Bakersfield.com Community - Sun, 03/04/2012 - 07:22

When Bakersfield High put seven wrestlers in the finals 10 years ago and won four 2002 state championships, it amassed 226.5 team points. The record seemed as unassailable to the California wrestling world as Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak or Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game.

That is until Saturday at Rabobank Arena, when Clovis blew by 226.5 points set a new mark of 256.5
