Bakersfield.com Community - Fri, 05/25/2012 - 06:02

FRESNO -- It wasn't exactly a thunderous hit, and it didn't come from a star player, but in 50 years, it's the one Garces players will tell their grandchildren about.

The Rams' No. 9 hitter, Steven Hardt, hit a seeing-eye single through the right side to score pinch-runner Chris Sakowski and lift Garces to a 4-3 victory in eight innings in Friday's Division III Central Section baseball championship at Fresno High.

May 25 fish report

Bakersfield.com Community - Fri, 05/25/2012 - 04:20

Kern County, southern San Joaquin Valley

LAKE ISABELLA: Wind and rising water levels continue to be a problem for the crappie anglers. The bite is fair, very spotty. Boat anglers are getting a few fish off Rocky Point and Kissack Cove in 10 to 25 feet of water. These continue to be quality fish to 2 pounds with most fish in the 1-4 to 1-8 range. The catfish action is probably a better bet with very good action in most of the coves on fish to 5 pounds on frozen shad and mackerel. The trout remain pretty good at the auxiliary dam. Also quite a few bass being caught and the bluegill bite is just starting.

Ontiveros lifts Wolf Pack to title game

Bakersfield.com Community - Thu, 05/24/2012 - 05:56

Nisa Ontiveros strikes out an awful lot of batters for Ridgeview High's softball team, but she's not afraid to rely on her defense.

That became quite literal in the seventh inning of Wednesday's Central Section Division III semifinal, when Ontiveros went full extension to catch an infield pop-up, lost her balance -- and caught herself when she wrapped second baseman Jackie Marintez in a bear hug.

High school notebook: KCOA looks to boost number of officials for football

Bakersfield.com Community - Thu, 05/24/2012 - 05:47

You can't have high school football without officials, and you can't have officials if they all retire without replacements.

That's a growing problem, said Ken Lopez, treasurer of the Kern County Officials Association. He said a number of older officials are nearing the end of their careers, and the organization's farm system isn't exactly deep.
